Abstract | This guide is intended for use in presenting a 16-hour, 8-session reading course designed to develop the workplace literacy skills of persons employed in the manufacturing and service industries. The course is structured so that, upon its completion, students will be able to accomplish the following: use a reading plan to skim, scan, and read materials ranging from labels to detailed instructions and reports; apply strategies for dealing with unfamiliar vocabulary; identify main ideas and supporting details of paragraphs, memos, and reports; research information; use information to take appropriate action; and evaluate results. The instructional materials included in each section cover concepts relevant to manufacturing and service industry employees' existing jobs and strategies for learning other tasks if the opportunity should arise. Each section contains some or all of the following: lists of objectives, session topics, methods, evaluation methods/criteria, and required materials; teacher tips; learning activities/exercises; word lists; and information/tip sheets.
