AbstractThe University of Glamorgan (Wales) conducted a research project to determine the counseling and guidance needs of its mature students. The project's long-term objective was to develop a new institutional policy for a coordinated guidance and counseling system reflecting the different needs, perceptions, and situations of students and staff, and its short-term objectives were to develop a student support system and staff training programs to meet the counseling/guidance needs of older students. During the project, researchers gathered data through a pilot questionnaire, progressively focused semistructured interviews of students and staff, and group discussions with staff. Data from the survey, interviews, and group discussions were analyzed by using complete and partial transcription methods. A proposal was drafted for a comprehensive system guidance/counseling and tutoring services for mature students that would focus on the following areas/problems: personal tutoring (personal progress, accommodation, relationships, personal problems, and financial/legal welfare); vocational tutoring (development of self-preservation and career-vocational skills, institutional membership, and career choice/development); and academic tutoring (study skills and specific subject development, admissions, and option choice).
