Abstract | This document presents material for a family life or sex education curriculum for grades 9 and 10. It includes homework, lesson plans, information on audiovisual materials, speakers, field trips, a summary of Washington state law and guidelines, a sample parent letter, a discussion of universal values versus controversial issues, and a protocol for determining appropriate responses to student questions. The lesson plans are divided into 30 units. The first consists of a unit introduction and pretest. The second discusses touch and abstinence. Unit 3 describes the reproductive system. Units 4 through 8 are grouped under puberty and adolescence. These units concentrate on developing feelings, the need to belong, and concerns over physical changes and what is "normal." Units 9 through 12 discuss sexual exploitation. Areas covered include communication, consent versus exploitation, the continuum of sexual touch, and assault strategies. Units 13 through 15 are grouped together under pregnancy. Units 16 through 18 are on planning to parent. Unit 19 focusses on the unplanned pregnancy. Units 24 through 23 discuss contraception. Units 24 through 28 are grouped under sexually transmissible diseases, with units 25 and 26 focussing on HIV and AIDS. Unit 29 is on sexual health care. Unit 30 consists of a review and post test. Eight appendices include the parent letter, laws and guidelines, audio-visuals, speakers, panels, field trips, considerations in an unplanned pregnancy, and overviews of F.L.A.S.H for grades 5 and 6 and grades 7 and 8.
