| Abstract | Findings of a study that identified factors contributing to the maintenance of the collaborative action research process in public schools are presented in this paper. Specifically, the study evaluated outcomes of Project LEARN, the League of Educational Action Researchers in the Northwest, a university-sponsored school improvement initiative. The project is based on the belief that teacher collaboration on research facilitates an effective schooling ethos. Methodology involved two faculty surveys, interviews with teachers, and observation of their principals. Findings indicate that collaborative action research can contribute to the development of a school culture that is conducive to school improvement. Contributing factors include leadership support for group work, high expectations, an experimental school ethic, and a shared focus. One table and three figures are included.
