Abstract | Emerging research on instructional leadership is examined in this paper, with a focus on the new perspective on strategic thinking. The main theme is that research must address the reasoning that underlies the exercise of leadership rather than describe discrete behaviors of effective leaders. A computer simulation designed to facilitate the transfer from research to leadership practice is described. The simulation model asks aspiring principals to choose a combination of improvement strategies using research-based cost and benefit information. Outcomes of the simulation are discussed and suggestions are made for the design and delivery of administrative training and development. Appendices contain a description of the problem scenario, a list of school improvement strategies, a synopsis of research on a strategy, and an example of a cost-benefit strategy description.
