Abstract | This paper studies the effect of participation in intercollegiate athletics on student-athlete grade point averages. The study was done to address critics of intercollegiate athletics who charged that participation in athletics hinders the academic performance of the student athlete, while coaches and student athletes themselves often empirically observe better academic performance in-season than out-of-season. A comparison of in-season with out-of-season grade point averages (GPA) in a sample of 74 student athletes at Trenton State College, New Jersey, during the 1988-89 academic year showed no significant difference between in-season and out-of-season grades among players (male and female) defined as eligible for the study. It is suggested that these study results can be useful to coaches planning academic programs for their players. Contains a 25-item bibliography. (Author/GLR) |
