| Abstract | This paper discusses "Guided Design," a method for teaching course content which engages students in group decision-making, where problems are solved or issues are resolved in a step-by-step process using instructions and feedbacks especially prepared to make students think for themselves about subject matter rather than depend on the teacher to convey all information. The paper (1) shows the difference a change from lecture/discussion to Guided Design made in student evaluations; (2) reviews principles used in Guided Design to point out how creative thinking combines with the analytical and critical; (3) describes how this method stimulates students to think creatively; and (4) offers an example of a course in theater history which used Guided Design to stimulate student interest. One table and six figures are included and 19 references are attached. An appendix presents student comments about the value of learning in a group decision-making format. (SR) |
