Abstract | In considering the historical contributions of women in a high school history course, a series of projects were developed that were activity oriented, created student involvement in historial research, and organized to feature the roles women have played in the development of the United States. Classroom procedures are introduced based on early popular culture forms: (1) the popular story paper; (2) the illustrated song slide; (3) the comic book; and (4) the crankie (a simple, homemade, story device made out of a cardboard box with two dowel sticks and a roll of paper with pictures and words). The objectives for the project are described as well as the rationale for employing these four techniques. The format for a "Student Guide to Writing a Literary Story Paper" as well as all materials used in teaching the song slide, comic book, and crankie segments are included.
