AbstractThis study identifies factors associated with black undergraduate students who graduated and those who withdrew from Clemson University (South Carolina), a predominantly white, rural university. The sample consisted of all (838) black undergraduates who had graduated or withdrawn from Clemson after 1979. The study examined student history data from the University data base and information on the college experience at Clemson, based on telephone interviews with 408 former students. Student history data indicated that females were academically more qualified than males; and that Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) scores, high school class standing, class rank, and grade point averages could be used as indicators of success. The major aspects of college experience identified as significant indicators of success included involvement in campus organizations and activities, and positive interaction with faculty and staff. The major reasons cited by former students for Clemson's higher dropout rate of blacks included the following: (1) isolated location; (2) small black community; and (3) lack of cultural outlets. Statistical data are included on seven charts and graphs, and 29 tables. A six-page list of references is also included. The appendices include University Enrollment Statistics; MANOVA and Mean Tables of History Factors; the Questionnaire for Students Who Graduated; the Questionnaire for Students Who Withdrew; Frequency Table of History Factors-Sample Population; and Frequency Table of History Factors and College Experience of Respondents.
