Abstract | The first of three parts of this booklet, which assumes no previous knowledge of computers or programming, explains what computers are and briefly describes the components of a computer system. The second section examines the different ways in which the computer can be used in higher education, including its use: (1) as a "super calculator"; (2) to teach about computers and programming; (3) as a direct aid to the teaching/learning process; (4) in an administrative or managerial role; and (5) as a database. The third section discusses technical factors, factors relating to the availability of software, attitudinal factors, and other factors affecting the educational use of computers. An annotated list of four references recommended for further reading is included. (MES) |
