AbstractCompetencies are identified for the four primary instructional areas of the Connecticut Vocational Agriculture Curriculum: plant science, agricultural mechanics, natural resources, and animal science. The competencies for each instructional area are divided into those for exploratory units generally appropriate for instruction at the freshman-sophomore level and those for advanced units generally appropriate for instruction at the junior-senior level. Each set of competencies for an instructional area includes an index of the exploratory units and competencies and their page numbers, an index of the advanced units and competencies and their page numbers, and a list of competencies appropriate to the given primary instructional area. Representative topics are (1) for plant science--agricultural pest control, greenhouse and retail flower shop management, turf management, beekeeping, plant identification, anatomy and function, nutrition, and propagation; (2) for agricultural mechanics--electricity, welding, power tools, small engines, tractor driving, agricultural machinery repair and maintenance, agricultural surveying, electric motors, and field machines; (3) for natural resources--conservation, forestry and wildlife management, outdoor safety, fish culture, and forest fire prevention and control; and (4) for animal science--forage crops, breeding and genetics, livestock judging, veterinary science, and animal health, housing, nutrition, and selection.
