AbstractThe Warm Springs Career Exploration Project (WSCEP) is an adaptation of experience-based career education (EBCE) for Native Americans residing on the Warm Springs Indian Reservation. The project served as a full-time program for American Indian students aged 16-19 who had dropped out of school, and also served as a part-time career development program for Indian students attending Madras High School. About 50 students were enrolled in the program during the first year. An evaluation of the program was conducted after the first year, using the following assessment instruments: Standard Assessment System, Sequential Test of Educational Progress (STEP), counselor's rating form, work supervisor's rating form, Youthwork battery, student entry questionnaire, staff time log, student end-of-project questionnaire, learning manager interview, student case study interview, EBCE process checklist, parent interview, employer interview, and program completion survey. The evaluation findings showed that the WSCEP students did not demonstrate greater knowledge of occupations available on the reservations, did not show a greater understanding of how to prepare for a career, did not demonstrate greater self-confidence and skill when talking with adults, and did not show greater vocational maturity or greater understanding of job holding skills than a comparison group. Reasons advanced for failure to meet these project objectives centered around students' low level of attendance at the program and staff turnover during the project start-up. Students, parents, and employers felt that the opportunity to explore careers was a major strength of WSCEP and that the program ought to be improved and continued. (KC)
