Abstract | A study of Charlotte Zolotow's life and the themes of her children's books provides an illustration of the usefulness and problems in the application of theories of adult development, especially as they apply to women. This report of the study contains (1) discussions of Erik Erikson's and Daniel Levinson's theories of adult development; (2) a brief biography of Charlotte Zolotow, her involvement with books, and a case history of her adult development; and (3) comparisons of her life to the theories of adult development. Two appendixes contain a chronology of Charlotte Zolotow's books, with codings for their thematic content (family life, cycle of life, nonfamily feelings, and "nature nurtures"); and an annotated bibliography of her writings.
