AbstractThis publication suggests consumer education learning activities for grades five through eight. It is intended as a guideline for developing local curriculum and for designing instructional strategies. Students are taught to learn to manage, to buy wisely, to save and invest, to protect themselves from unscrupulous practice, and to understand the responsibilities of being a tax-paying citizen. Section I identifies the specific concepts, competencies, and learner outcomes which are the target of the middle school consumer education curriculum. Section II, which comprises the major portion of the document, describes learning activities, resources, and methods of evaluation which teachers may use in developing learner competencies. Some examples of the kinds of activities included follow. Students compare budget plans; conduct a bake sale; use a daily newspaper to plan a grocery trip; write a weekly budget for managing their money; and visit bankers, stockbrokers, and real estate brokers to discuss various forms of investment. Also included in the document is an overview of consumer concepts K-12, a consumer code of ethics, and a case study. (Author/RM)
