Abstract | Intended as an overview for English department faculty with no direct experience in teaching freshman composition, this report contains a general account of the origin, basic features, and current direction of using tutorial methods in freshman composition classes. The five sections of the report provide the following information: (1) the history of the American tutorial method of teaching freshman composition, including its trans-Atlantic roots in England; (2) the teacher/student conference strategy as applied in the tutorial method; (3) evaluation of the tutorial classroom; (4) using small writing groups and peer teaching strategies in the tutorial classroom; and (5) the future of the tutorial classroom.
