AbstractThis handbook provides vocational educators at the secondary and postsecondary levels with approaches for working with minimally disadvantaged students enrolled in their regular programs. Chapter 1 focuses on the disadvantaged student and considers such problems as perceptual difficulties, resistance to authority, parental influence, insecurity and aggressiveness, and passiveness and fear. Seven characteristics of disadvantaged students are discussed. Chapter 2 considers the four elements of classroom/laboratory climate--environment, instructional aids, teacher(s), and student--and how these variables influence performance and behavior. Chapter 3 discusses various aspects of management, including laboratory management, management of learning, and student management. Effective instruction is the focus of chapter 4. Three survey forms for learning/teaching style evaluation are provided and discussed. Other topics include helping students with reading and math deficiencies, determining a student's academic difficulty, student motivation, improving students' note-taking skills, and demonstration as an effective instructional technique. Chapter 5 deals with evaluation, including testing, test question selection, informal feedback, praise and criticism, and observations. Chapter 6 briefly addresses teaching employability skills and job placement. Additional resources in chapter 7 include (1) Do's and Don't's of Working with Disadvantaged Students and (2) Intellectual Characteristics of Disadvantaged Children and Youth. (YLB)
