AbstractThis guide provides adult education programs with information gathered and issues encountered when a local adult basic education (ABE) program provided child care services. The approaches discussed are intended for possible adaptation in ABE programs where such a need exists. Section 1, Project Description and Results, gives program background and describes the two tested delivery systems providing the support service of child care to ABE students: (1) daytime child care at a location away from the site of the ABE class and in a cooperative effort with a currently existing day care center and (2) part-time child care provided in the same location as the class. An evaluative summary provides statistics and discussion. Child care forms are appended. Section 2, Legal and Insurance Issues, reports results of a consultation with a local school corporation attorney regarding legal aspects of ABE programs providing child care services and of an evaluation (with recommendations) regarding insurance liability issues. Section 3, Currently Existing Alternatives, highlights five ABE program sites where child care services of three types are being provided for adult students: cooperation with vocational education, cooperation with other agencies, and use of paraprofessionals. Section 4 is a Parenting Bibliography that cites books, pamphlets, workshop/study units, and films. (YLB)
