AbstractThe way that New Hampshire high school students make decisions about their post-graduation plans and the factors that influence these decisions were studied. Twenty-seven public and parochial New Hampshire high schools representing about 3,000 seniors were studied. Seniors from the 1979-80 graduating class and their parents were administered questionnaires. Generally, the approach was to consider the decision-making process as culminating in student plans to continue formal, nonmilitary schooling within six months after graduation or student plans not to continue schooling in that period of time. It was found that approximately equal numbers of young men and women were planning to attend a two- or four-year college. Information is presented on grades in the last two school years, scores on the Scholastic Aptitude Test, program of study during high school, student employemnt during high school, expected occupation 10 years from now, and salary expectations. The relationship between student plans and the educational level, occupation, and income of parents was analyzed. The awareness of college-bound students about financial aid opportunities was also determined. About 53 percent of the study sample indicated that they would continue their education in a nonmilitary program within six months after graduation from high school and about 30 percent of these planned to attend a four-year college. A literature review, bibliography, and sample questionnaire are among the included materials. (SW)
