| Abstract | Beginning with the decade of the 50's, continuing through the 60's and midway into the 70's, the National Science Foundation, the U.S. Office of Education, and, most recently, the National Institute of Education have become involved in curriculum development on a national basis. The climate of the 1950's and early 60's witnessed the upgrading and updating of the science and mathematics curriculum as well as projects in the social sciences, English, and modern languages, much of which was funded by government agencies. It was the heyday of curriculum development. By the mid-60's, the Great Society Programs had begun, and the focus had shifted from academics and manpower goals to those that served the social needs and soothed the social conscience of the nation. As the decade of the 70's opened, funding for curriculum development declined dramatically as a concerned citizenry and a sensitive Congress began to raise questions and to call for assessment efforts. As the history of curriculum development is traced it becomes evident that influence has been exerted over time by a diverse set of individuals, groups, and interests. The most important identifiable missing pieces from past efforts, however, are carefully designed strategies of curriculum dissemination and implementation, and professional education programs planned specifically to prepare teachers to cope with, make use of, and engage in curriculum innovation.
