AbstractDesigned as a helpful guide and "how-to-do-it" outline for those on the Navajo Reservation who work with children, this guide is arranged to offer quick reference and simple projects requiring the minimum of materials. The projects are designed to meet the Navajo child's art needs based on the belief that the art program of the elementary school should concern itself basically with four major avenues of personal growth and development: (1) the growth of aesthetic awareness and sensitivities, (2) the acquisition of art skills, (3) creative and critical thinking, (4) individual and personal expression. The document includes the following: program scope, need, philosophy; roles of the administrator, classroom teacher, and parents; and art appreciation activities for kindergarten through second grade, third through fifth grade, and sixth through eighth grade. The following subjects and activities are treated in this guide: the elementary art room, murals, puppets, lettering and postermaking; recipes, modeling materials, paper sculpture, carving media, sculpturing media, cleaners and thinners, bulletin boards, paper-mache, drawing media and tools. Among other topics are: paper-mache sculpture, painting, crayons, colored chalk, transparent water colors, inks and dyes; printmaking, weaving and a selection of general projects. Exemplary exercises, illustrations, and lesson plans are also included in the guide. (RTS)
