Abstract | The second semester course intended to follow "Getting It Done in French" is presented here. In line with the comprehensive goals of the program as presented in the first volume, the primary objectives of this second course are directed toward achievement of communication skills needed for daily living. Specifically, these objectives are: to increase the verbal fluency of the learner, to develop the ability to make an educated guess at meaning, to increase listening comprehension and to increase the learner's self-confidence in dealing with the French language and people. Each of the fifteen units is divided into sections related to these objectives: a situational dialogue; supplementary vocabulary and useful expressions, including explanations regarding their use; presentation of grammar, an analysis of it and various types of exercises; documents for reading comprehension; and cultural insights. Reproductions of authentic documents useful to an American living in France are included in each unit. In some units, instructions and exercises on decoding techniques and listening discrimination are provided. The vocabulary list at the end includes items in the dialogues and drills that are new and non-cognate. A reference list of suggested additional reading is appended. (AMH) |
