Abstract | This book closely examines the functioning of the Education Committee of the Sixth Illinois Constitutional Convention. As an administrative assistant to the committee throughout the convention, the author was able to gather detailed information about the committee's activities through personal observation and interviews with committee members. Statistical data were supplied by the Illinois Education Association, the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction of Illinois, and the Board of Higher Education. Specific chapters investigate the following topics: composition and procedures of the Education Committee, creating a state board of education, formulating educational objectives, providing for higher education, aid to nonpublic schools, financing education, the new education article at first reading, the education article at second and third readings, and conclusions and implications.
