| Abstract | If education in America is to serve the needs of the individual, there must be a change in terms of what education is, who it serves, how it serves, and by what methodology it is conveyed. Community education is a concept of education that involves people. People have dignity, worth, and really count as individuals. Four rather broad general purposes can be developed as a rationale for community schools: economic value to the community, social imperative to our society, democratic rights to be involved, and the principle of accountability. To these ends, the community school director is provided with guidance in the areas of community involvement patterns, the responsibilities and opportunities of the director, ways of gaining support for programs, the proper attitudes for teachers of deprived children, handling special interest groups, and the importance of the fiscal responsibility.
