AbstractThis study was designed to collect and analyze the verbal protocols of students involved in introspection as they responded to standardized measures of reading comprehension, for the purpose of learning more about the reading process. Eleven seventh grade students from an urban public school were randomly chosen from 61 subjects who met the criterion of grade level or above performance on Form IM Level D of the Gates-MacGinite Reading Test. Results indicated that (1) the following most frequent strategies were yielded by the tree diagram procedure: Textual, Discourse Dependent, Key Lexical Item; Textual, Discourse Dependent, Generalization; Textual, Choice Dependent, Generalization; and Nontextual, Personal; (2) the four most frequently used strategies yielded 80 percent greater success; (3) some reasoning strategies were not used for some item types; (4) analyses of variance revealed a significant strategy effect and a strategy x item type interaction for each individual; and (5) there appeared to be a disproportionate frequency of use of strategy 111 with inference item types and strategy 113 and verbal reasoning types. The study demonstrated the usefulness of introspection as a method for gathering information about the process of reading. (Author/RB)
