Abstract | The guide offers numerous practical suggestions for training mentally retarded children in self care skills, and catalogs developmental characteristics of children from birth to a mental age of 11 years. Included are brief sections on the management of neurologically impaired children and mongoloid babies, the importance of speech stimulation, and the necessity of sex education. Training guidelines concern the areas of discipline, dressing skills, feeding, personal hygiene, play activities, and toilet training. Suggestions such as the following are offered: teach by showing what you want the child to do and allow him to practice the task; prepare the child in the mechanics of feeding by allowing him to play in sand with a spoon or shovel; and select toys on the basis of their appropriateness for the child's mental age. Developmental abilities for each mental age level are discussed in terms of motor characteristics, speech skills, personal-social characteristics, eating skills, and play activities. (GW) |
