Abstract | We investigated whether basic arithmetic skills of nursery school children can be trained with a newly developed app-based number game, based on the model of acquisition of basic arithmetic concepts. The application (app)-based number game is an adaptive training program. In an explorative study, 33 German 4- to 6-year-old children were quasi-randomly assigned to an intervention or a passive control group. Arithmetic performance of children was assessed three times, in a pre-, post- and follow-up test design. Children of the intervention group played the app-based number game four times between pre- and post-test. The results show that the adaptive app-based game led to significantly greater gains on all five levels of acquisition of basic arithmetic concepts compared to no specific activities in the passive control group. We conclude that the adaptive app-based number game can contribute to the development of basic arithmetic concepts. We discuss possible explanations and practical implications. (DIPF/Orig.). |
