| Abstract | With regard to the publishing of several introductions to foreign language teaching, the authors aim at pointing out whom such guides or manuals are intended for and what innovations they may promote in the foreign language classroom. The main focus of their paper is on the difference between knowledge and hypotheses that derive from research into second language acquisition and foreign language pedagogy on the one hand and the experiences and beliefs of teachers on the other. Important dichotomies of foreign language teaching and learning are discussed in the perspective of a communicative approach that takes proficiency, language awareness and intercultural sensitivity into account. Using the example of implicit vs. explicit teaching of grammar they try to show that a linguistic approach should no longer be the only focus of interest of language pedagogy. Introductions to foreign language teaching will lead to the necessary changes in the classroom only if they refer to the multiple experiences of practitioners. Furthermore they must allow for the results in fields like pedagogy and social theory if they want to cope with the essential requirements of multicultural societies. (Verlag, adapt.). |
