| Abstract | In the present paper, the authors examine the question of whether individual differences in lexical stress perception and in selective attention relate to improvements in spontaneous speech. They measured pronunciation improvements in 25 L2 learners of English enrolled in a 7-week oral communication course. Improvements in overall comprehensibility and in word stress realization were measured through ratings of learners' speech recordings. Their ability to perceive and encode word stress placement in English was measured with an auditory phonological judgment task; selective attention was evaluated using the Attention Network Test. The results reveal that individual differences in word stress encoding are moderately related to the speech measures, but selective attention is not. (Verlag, adapt.). |
