| Abstract | This paper reviews the current state of assessment in higher education institutions in the United Kingdom in the light of the introduction of government sponsored standardised National Vocational qualifications and their widespread adoption by British universities and the piloting of General National Vocational Qalifications... A review of current practice indicates that assessment processes fall well short of what is desirable. There is muddle about what to assess, how to assess it and the educational and professional consequences of those assessments. There is very little evidence that there is widespread awareness of these deficiencies. There is a continuum of government intervention running from sponsoring research and development projects through the support of training in assessment for university teachers and the dissemination of good practice generally, to the direct requirement of the adoption of specific assessment practices through the funding mechanisms. Direct formal intervention would be in accord with current practice in primary and secondary schooling and vocational education. It seems possible therefore that, if the intermediate stages do not produce sufficient change, there will be general progression to the most interventionist options. (DIPF/Abstract übernommen) |
