Abstract | The contributions to this volume have been grouped into five different sections: new demands in EFL teaching training, issues for debate, research into EFL teacher education, reflective teaching, and primary language teacher education. This rich sample of resources is of different kinds and addresses different issues, perspectives, and challenges, impinging on foreign language teacher education. This book reflects an analysis of some of the most important issues in teacher education.... It covers topics such as education policies, student teacher knowledge construction, insights into the education of teachers for the development of learner autonomy, conceptual discussions, classroom research, and the application of new technologies.... Some of the issues discussed in this book are problems that most European countries face and must tackle in foreign language teacher training. The basic features that the book presents are the following: a pan-European tapestry of language teacher education; insights into how to educate teachers for flexible independent learning; a multi-disciplinary approach drawing on linguistics, psychology, and cultural studies; the shift from teacher training to teacher development; examples of experiential and awareness raising practice, initial and in-service teacher education in various European countries, critical analysis of current practices; innovations in the field of teacher development; an equal balance of theory and practice; signposts to the way ahead.
