| Abstract | David Little, Professor for Applied Linguistics at Trinity College Dublin, stated categorically "that all successful learning is in the end autonomous". If we accept this as true, then it must surely follow that autonomy should be a basic requirement for all learners, at whatever level. On the basis of recent findings of neurobiology and cognitive psychology the author proposes that an activity-led and partner-oriented approach should be adopted for such courses. His approach encourages non-linear, cooperative learning using a series of materials-based work-stations which allow a variety of pathways and options. Teachers construct new classroom procedures through experimenting with authentic and complex environments. The single-track, input-output approach is replaced by an open-ended, multidimensional one. A complete blue-print for a teacher training course demonstrates how this approach can be implemented in practice. (Verlag). |
