Abstract | This report compiles the proceedings from the second national forum of the Canadian Child Care Federation, held in November 1999, which provided an opportunity for early childhood educators, practitioners, and researchers to share knowledge, learn from each other, and network with colleagues. The agenda included 4 keynote speeches, 35 workshops on current Canadian early childhood research, and a national panel on children in Canada. Keynote speeches appear here in both French and English; summaries of workshop presentations are published in the language in which they were presented at the forum. The topics for the keynote addresses are: the kind of education children need to tackle the challenges of the new millennium, the U.N. Conventions on the Rights of the Child, readiness to learn, and child poverty interventions. Workshop topics include child abuse and neglect, child and program assessment, learning disabilities, curricula, inclusive programs, partnerships to improve quality, preschool education in public schools, school-age child care, fathers, rural child care, self-care, ill child care, First Nations child care, child care policy development, and findings from the National Longitudinal Survey on Children and Youth, focusing on custody arrangements and child behavioral or emotional problems, the myths of balancing work and family, and the impact of tobacco and alcohol use on newborns. The conference agenda is appended. (KB) |
