Abstract | This report provides state-by-state information on the characteristics and performance of schools and students in each state, information useful for monitoring the progress and evaluating the success of education reforms. The report contains two-page profiles that report the same indicators for each state and the District of Columbia. The indicators in each state profile are organized in four categories: (1) school and teacher demographics; (2) student demographics; (3) statewide accountability information; and (4) student achievement. The report tracks the progress of Title I programs, especially the development and use of state standards and assessments in state accountability for the programs. Title I, the largest single grant program of the federal government, provides funds to states for additional educational support for the neediest children. A goal of the report is to chart the progress of the states in developing Title I accountability systems based on state content standards and aligned state assessment programs. The individual state profiles and trends in assessment results are useful for initial determinations of educational improvements that may be related to Title I programs. Appendixes contain further state proficiency level definitions, content indicators by state, and National Assessment of Educational Progress definitions and further information. (SLD) |
