Abstract | Based on the view that personal and social development are essential to children's early learning and that personal and social development must be supported by sensitive interventions from adults who understand children's needs, this book presents the theory and practice of personal and social development among young children. Using everyday examples from early years settings, the book shows how children can be helped to develop confidence, social skills, and independence and how early years workers can contribute to this development. Following an introduction on the significance of young children's personal, social, and emotional development, the chapters are: (1) "Confident Children"; (2) "Living and Learning with Others"; (3) "Becoming Independent"; (4) "Emotional Well-Being"; (5) "Dispositions for Learning"; (6) "Moral and Spiritual Development"; (7) "Living in the Wider World"; (8) "Working with Families To Promote Young Children's Personal and Social Development"; and (9) "The Influence of Books and Stories." Each chapter contains suggestions for practice, professional questions for consideration, and references. (KB) |
