Abstract	This Kids Count data book examines statewide trends in the well-being of Texas' children. The statistical portrait is based on indicators in ten general areas of children's well being: (1) number of low birthweight babies; (2) rate of prenatal care; (3) infant mortality rates; (4) child death rates; (5) number of births to single teens; (6) juvenile violent crime arrest rate; (7) number of teen violent deaths; (8) dropout rate; (9) fourth grade math performance; and (10) fourth grade reading performance. Following an introduction, the first section of the report presents an overview of research findings, which include the following: child population is growing rapidly; poverty among children is increasing; family structure is a leading predictor for child poverty; a disproportionately large number of children in poverty are minority children; parental employment does not necessarily protect children from poverty; 647,000 families with children are living just above the poverty line; and consequences of poverty are cumulative and self-perpetuating. This section also includes descriptions of the indicators and definitions and data understanding. The second section of the report consists of indicator maps for the state as a whole. The third section and bulk of the report provides data, by county, on the key indicators for the years 1985, 1991, 1992, and 1994, including percent change over time. The final section provides tables by indicator of individual county rankings. (SD)
