Abstract | An English-as-a-Second-Language (ESL) program for adults is outlined that uses a local newspaper as a source of instructional material. The course uses transitional listening and speaking activities that lead to literacy (reading and writing) components. The teaching guide is modular, enabling the teacher to select the most appropriate module for any class session. Module topics are: food, jobs, shopping, shelter, and the community. Each module consists of a series of activities, each focusing on a developmental subskill within a general language skill (listening, speaking, reading, or writing). For each activity, the targeted subskill is specified, the activity is described, and variations for each of three proficiency levels (beginning, intermediate, and advanced) are suggested. Following the instructional modules is a section outlining the scope and sequence of a 7-week course of instruction, with 21 key lessons included. The final section contains a student placement test and skill completion checks for each proficiency level. (MSE) (Adjunct ERIC Clearinghouse on Literacy Education) |
