Abstract | The enormous expansion of higher education globally was an important feature of the 20th century. Between 2002 and 2009, China and India dominated global growth in tertiary enrollments, accounting for 26 million (44%) of the overall increase of 55 million. The drivers of the huge expansion of higher education (what has been termed massification) -- demographic surges and economic growth -- are ensuring that the vast majority of growth in student enrollment in higher education is occurring (and will occur) in emerging and developing economies |
