AbstractColombia has been ravaged for over 40-years by escalating civil conflict and more than half of its population of 42 million live below the poverty line. As a result, many children and young people are excluded from school and drop out rates of those who gain places are high. It is in Bogota, the capital of Colombia, where many displaced families arrive, settling on areas of land on the city's outskirts, where basic services--education, clean water, electricity and health--are often neither available nor accessible. Displaced, rural families have no access to land to cultivate crops and do not have the knowledge or skills to find employment in cities. For many children and young people, living in impoverished and over-crowded conditions and excluded from education or skills development opportunities, life on the streets can seem an attractive option. In response to an escalating influx of displaced youth who arrive daily in Bogota, swelling the ranks of those at risk of home abandonment, the YMCA undertakes action-research to identify needs, to keep abreast of the changing faces of conflict and its impact on the young and to inform programme development. As access to primary and high school education levels fall and prolonged absenteeism and desertion increase, the YMCA has identified the need to research the factors that impede access to school and inhibit attendance and retention rates. To this end, the YMCA has carried out a research project entitled "Prevention of school desertion in Colombia: a contribution to national peaceful coexistence". The research explores the causal factors and impact of school desertion prior to completion of primary and high school among children and young people from marginalised communities. It uses findings to inform the development of an accelerated learning project with out-of-school children and young people and to devise preventive models with children and young people at risk of dropping out.
