Abstract | The rapid growth of the Internet over the past 20 years has brought with it a vast amount of communication about public issues of concern to citizens. Over time, the Internet has become increasingly social and interactive. This move from "Web 1.0" to "Web 2.0" involves a great deal of user-generated content and interaction. This transition has huge implications for adult civic engagement because it means that many civic acts can be accomplished or advanced through the use of online tools. The easy access to information and collaborative properties of the Internet create exciting opportunities for democracy. This chapter reviews some of the online tools civic organizations have used to engage adults successfully in deliberation and action around public issues. The chapter offers examples of different tools and describes strengths and weaknesses of various technological features. (ERIC). |
