Abstract | This review essay talks about two books on disability. One message above all others jumps out of from these two books: namely, the failure of human society to adequately respond to the needs of their fellow citizens who are disabled. The combined authorship of over 40 scholars across the two books and their 24 chapters conclude that disability, illness and poverty are so intertwined in all nations that to focus only on one domain is at best inadequate, and at worse ineffectual. With surgical precision, chapter after chapter spells out the empirical data that support this argument, which are complemented by detailed stories of individuals, their families and communities. These are all the more powerful because of their factual reporting; be it of the impact of landmines in Cambodia or the politically inflicted poverty of Zimbabwe. Truly for many millions of contemporaries around the world, it is the winter of despair. (ERIC). |
