Abstract | The great variety of interests and opinions in present-day society carries a priori the potential for conflict and tension, and this imparts timely relevance to the value of "tolerance" in political interactions among social groups and individuals. As a component of the social group of young people, college students are characterized by specific traits, including more active political involvement and participation in social and civic processes. The goal of an empirical survey in Murmansk oblast in 2008 and 2009 was to study the characteristics of the political tolerance of this group, as well as the context and characteristics of its manifestation. Even though the survey showed that on the whole college students do not show much involvement in political processes, an analysis of the functional relations between the indicators of political participation, on the one hand, and the scales that measure an individual's tolerance on the different levels, on the other hand, showed that social and political activities do not in any way foster the formation of an individual's tolerance.
