AbstractA national consensus has emerged around the educational expectations for all students. Rigorous standards for college and career readiness developed by state leaders have been adopted by 44 states and the District of Columbia. State leaders have formed two consortia that are designing new assessments to support these standards. This shared agreement to educate all students to the same high levels of achievement represents a major shift in the nation's attitude about public education. Unfortunately, the educational infrastructure is not currently designed to support this shift in goals. Policy and practice at the federal, state, and local levels need to support deeper learning, the knowledge and skills all students will need to succeed in college, career, and life. Deeper learning--rich core content taught in innovative ways that allow students to learn and apply what they have learned--is imperative. Deeper learning prepares students to know and master core academic content; think critically and solve complex problems; work collaboratively; communicate effectively; and be self-directed and able to incorporate feedback.
