AbstractTo be successful in game play requires students to do more than merely execute sport-specific movement skills well. Students should be learning how to read specific game situations while not in possession of the ball, respond appropriately with movements to reposition themselves to gain an advantage for their team or self, react to produce appropriate skill execution, and recover to set up further game involvement. Using a Tactical Games Approach facilitates the development of the students' understanding of overall game play, whereas traditional physical education approaches different sports through direct instruction that centers primarily on skill execution in isolation. A tactical approach puts movement skills and tactical learning within the context of the game along with its associated tactical problems, and does not restrict the use of multiple instructional methods for the achievement of specified game learning. A tactical approach is consistent with "game sense" or the "Teaching Games for Understanding" (TGFU, 2009) model where sessions begin and end with game play that contextualize the practical application of movement skills.
