Abstract | In this article, the author presents an ideal question that can take an art teacher and his or her students through all the levels of thought in Bloom's taxonomy--perfect for modeling the think-aloud process: "How many people is the artist inviting into this picture?" This great question always helps the students look beyond the obvious and dig deeper into the artist's thoughts and plans. When the students are asked to consider how and why the artist set up his or her piece, their minds are opened to a level above the literal. This question can also begin a thorough discussion of the balance between positive and negative space. It will highlight the value, purpose and importance of negative space in a work. This adds to the students' repertoire of knowledge of design that can be applied to their own work. This question can drive oral discussions, written assignments and comprehensive tests, as well.
