AbstractRookie Rugby is a continuous team invasion game of tag with a ball. It is also inclusive giving every participant an active role regardless of their size, shape, gender, or experience. In essence, all players are quarterbacks who can run, catch, pass, tag, evade, and score. Thus, rugby empowers students to create and react, cooperate and compete, and develop motor skills and tactical concepts complementary to other sports. These on-the-field components are underpinned by a long history of traditions and values around teamwork, discipline, respect, and community that are encouraged through participation in the game. It is the combination of these factors that makes Rookie Rugby a powerful tool for youth and athletic development. This article will touch upon the rules, skills, and concepts of Rookie Rugby in addition to explaining a tactical games approach to effectively teaching and coaching the game. Linking all these factors together are seven principles of the sport: (1) having possession; (2) moving forward; (3) creating space; (4) providing support; (5) displaying continuity; (6) applying pressure; and (7) scoring points. Understanding how each of these components fits within the game provides a clear understanding of how the game can be effectively coached using a tactical games approach, and moreover, a framework for implementing this approach.
