Abstract | Historically, physical education has purported to promote student learning across the psychomotor, cognitive, and affective domains. Use of adventure-type activities within a physical education curriculum can provide a valuable tool for physical educators toward truly meeting the affective domain. Recently published works have provided physical educators with valuable tools and guidelines by which to create a learning environment that fosters components inherent in adventure education as a means of achieving success within the affective domain. However, despite providing strategies and activities to facilitate such an environment, little attention has been paid to the manner in which these types of activities are processed with the students before, during, and after the experience. Thus, the purposes of this article are to: (1) discuss criteria that are helpful for successful adventure education activity selection, and (2) provide educators with steps to effectively assist students to draw meaning from adventure-type learning environments. Short vignettes follow each concept and thus provide illustration for application. (Contains 3 figures and 1 table.) (ERIC). |
