Abstract | The author examines four common myths that still influence individuals regarding their perspective and understanding of the role homeschooling plays in the education of American children. Myth 1 is that homeschooling produces social misfits, stemming from the belief that homeschooled students lack the socialization skills necessary for normal functioning in today's society. Myth 2 is that homeschooling fails to prepare good citizens by "isolating" students from the world, including political and social involvement. Myth 3 is that students who are homeschooled have difficulty entering college due to not having a high school diploma, grades, and SAT or ACT scores and might be at a disadvantage with their postsecondary studies. Myth 4 is that most people homeschool for religious reasons. In each case, realities are presented dispelling these myths. The author concludes that the expectation that public education should adequately serve the needs of children from broad and diverse backgrounds needs reconsideration. Public schools do not, cannot, and probably should not be expected to meet the needs of every child in the community. Instead, parents, schools, and the community need to work together to educate all children and maximize their potential, regardless of what form of education parents choose. (Contains 1 note.)
