Abstract | Five years ago, few would have predicted that expenditures for public education would be at the same levels, or perhaps even lower, particularly with growing numbers of "at-risk" students, rising accountability benchmarks, and a nationwide challenge of aging buildings and infrastructure. Yet, in these grim economic times, quality classroom instruction must remain a top priority for school leaders. It is vital that the economy, and the cuts it has brought, does not become an excuse for stagnating growth among teachers and the students they serve. Teachers--particularly new teachers--must not lose sight of the constant need to grow as professionals. The experience gap between new and veteran teachers is large, and school leaders must support novice practitioners on their way to gaining experience. Resources are scarce and districts are overwhelmed with budgetary issues, but new teachers must seek, and receive, support in their work. Even during turbulent economic times, novice teachers can be successful by infusing practical strategies. (ERIC). |
