AbstractAs the second decade of the new millennium begins, the authors state that it would seem appropriate to look once again at the status of literacy education as it affects adolescents and adults. Each year since 1997, an article appears in the periodical "Reading Today" listing the topics in literacy that are receiving varying degrees of attention, ranging from extremely "hot" to extremely "cold." The varying degrees of "warmth" of the various topics are determined by interviewing literacy leaders from around the United States as well as Canada and outside North America. In this article, the authors list the hot topics for 2010 and the names and institutional affiliations of those who helped determine those topics. Using data from a 2005 survey of literacy leaders, the authors discuss some of the issues most affecting educators interested in developing the literacy of adolescents. The authors conclude that adolescent literacy is finally getting deserved attention in the last half of the first decade of the new millennium. Unfortunately, despite the attention, there do not appear to be extensive reports of great successes. (Contains 1 table.) (ERIC).
