| Abstract | This study examines coping behaviors and felt experiences of homeless adults in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Data from in-depth interviews with 55 homeless adults reveal 5 general coping pattern groups: shelter users, campers, couch hoppers, mixed users, and circumstantial homeless. Homeless adults within each group experienced similar levels of physical deprivation. Felt experiences, however, including feelings of deprivation and views and attitudes toward life circumstances, varied substantially within each group. Qualitative analysis suggests ecological theory is a helpful framework for characterizing both coping behaviors and felt experiences. Social systems, including family and friends, relationships with social service providers, and communities are important factors in understanding homeless adults' coping behaviors and felt experiences.
